A wide aperture Standard Focal-Length Zoom Lens is a new design-concept for Sony. The lens offers the photographer the F2 wider aperture, normally only seen on prime lenses, but with the flexibility of using a zoom (eliminating the need to constantly switch focal length lenses). This will allow the photographer using this F2 G Master zoom, the ability to more easily create figure/ground separation or increased background blur (bokeh).
Designing an F2 zoom has added weight, over-and-above an F2.8 zoom, but Sony has managed to keep this lens to a fraction over 2 lb or just below one Kilogram in weight. In this review I compare its optical performance with three of Sony’s F1.8 prime lenses (stopped down to F2). This exercise demonstrates that it is possible to build a no-compromise wide-aperture lens that can out-perform a prime lens across its entire zoom range.
This review provides the photographer with the information so they can make an informed purchasing design and to choose a workflow that best suits their needs.
