Converting a color image to Black & White can be as simple as selecting the Black & White as the ‘Treatment’ in Lightroom.
In order to create a dramatic Black & White image that Ansel Adams would have been proud of, however, the process involves the use of Graduated Filters and localised Exposure adjustments (dodging and burning). This movie tutorial will show you how to create award winning Black & White images in the grand tradition of the genre.
The original image was captured in Yosemite National park (near Lake Mono) in the USA just as the first snow had fallen on the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As this tutorial replicates the drama of an Ansel Adams photograph it is fitting that it was taken in one of Ansel’s old stomping grounds. The Raw file can be downloaded here: Black and White.dng
